This Moment In Time

If I could freeze this moment in time…
His hand in mine.
Closing my eyes.
Remembering…
This once was a hand that fed me…
Clothed me…
Worked hard to give me everything I have ever needed or wanted…
Held onto me when I learned how to walk…
and let go when I needed to walk on my own…
Comforted me in times of deepest sadness…
and patted me on the back in times of greatest triumph.

If I could just freeze this moment and remember…
What his hand feels like in mine.
It feels the same.
It doesn’t feel like a hand that is slipping from mine every moment.
That can no longer pick up a spoon to stir his coffee…
Or dress…
Or eat…
Or hold his grandchildren.

In this moment in time..
With his hand in mine…
This doesn’t seem possible.
His hand feels the same.
Same size.
Same grip.
Same strength.
Same feeling you get when you hold it.

In this moment in time…
He is still the Father…
A protector…
A provider of comfort.
HE is still giving to ME…
The caregiver…
The daughter…
The child.

In this moment of time…I wonder….
Why does he stay?
Is he suffering?
Is he bored?
Is he depressed?
Is he aware at all?

In this moment of time…I wonder…
Does he stay for me?
Does he want US to have this moment…
To hold his hand and remember…
This is what it feels like to have unconditional love?

I don’t know the answers…
But it feels good to sit here and hold his hand…
In this moment in time…

It was just over one month ago that I last held my father's hand. I've known the comfort of that hand from my earliest memories of him when I was a very little girl through his final days and perhaps my most cherished memories. Please know that it truly is unconditional love, and he remains a guiding force in my life. You do know the answers.

Thank you for expressing so beautifully what I cherish so very much. Your words are a comfort and a gift, Michelle B.

Michelle B - will you please hug your Dad for me during the holidays? For everyone who loves their Dad - please hug them close. I'm thinking of you! This is my first Christmas without Dad. I need all of you to fill in the void for me. It's a big one.

Love and prayers to all of you.
