I wrote this poem following a particularly painful visit with my darling grandmother. On a recent visit, these words kept coming back to me and I found that they helped me remain with her longer, without expectation, and without getting lost in despair. My hope is that they may do the same for others.
I Can Sit With You Today
I’ve wrestled with this adversary long enough Now weary and spent I cry uncle I cannot change the diagnosis And I cannot have you back in the way that I would choose There’s little it seems that I can do But I can sit with you today I can sit with you and take pleasure in the way it feels to hold your hand I can appreciate the familiar timbre of your voice With no need to make sense of the words I can admire your hair’s striking blend of silver and grey And study the complexity of your face Enshrining it in my memory For now I’ll not search the past for recollections of better times Or allow myself to imagine a future without you Today is all I have So it has to be enough I can sit with you today.

This brought tears to my eyes. I know this feeling, this knowing. I too live this moment (at least when I'm having my better moments!). Thank you so much for sharing.

I've only been on the message boards a few days. So glad I found all these kindred spirits. I too have a poet's soul so I had to check out Musings. I'm glad I didn't miss your poem, so touching and well written. Hope to see more, Mama Sue

Thank you so much for these beautiful words. We are watching my Dad rapidily decline. This brought me a new perspective.
