Well kiddos, I did all right through the holidays largely due to some very good friends, but I find myself dreading what's coming up soon.
It's just a number, right? But it's the last of the firsts, and it's a biggie! I remember how happy he was a year ago, despite the rapid decline. Celebrating his 85th birthday, and his sister came to visit, knowing it would be the last time she would see him probably.
For those that have followed my Journey, there is still no contact with my parents other kids. Only a few emails exchanged with sister regarding her and brothers and grandkids mementos etc.
My sister did ask me via email how things got so wrong-it took a few days to compose an email back to her, but I did get some closure there, by listing out the incidences that happened, the lack of support, the calling of the police etc. and I did list how those things made me feel and how they affected me and dad. I didn't write back to her for a reply, or even expect one. This was for me, and that's OK
I don't want to close on a negative note so I will share a good memory. Last week I went to see my neurologist, and one of the first things he asked me was if I had any pain. I smiled and kind of chuckled, remembering so many times, and there were so many I couldn't count them all -that a doctor, nurse, social worker, eye doctor, ER nurse that would ask my dad if he was having any pain. He would get that big smile on his face that you have seen in the pictures I've put on here of him, and he would point to me and then just laugh and laugh !!
He never got tired of that joke, of pulling one over on me, and I never got tired of having him do that!!!
I hope we all have a pop tart and Twinkie day tomorrow !!
Julie.

I thinking of you and your dad ...
and also thinking that in honor of your dad there should be a yearly special treat a la one of those terrible taco bell type combinations of cheetos, tacos, burritos etc famously parodied on Saturday Night Live .... only this would be something like a poptart incased twinkie!

I'll thinking of you and your Dad Julie. All the firsts are so hard but you are not alone. Your Dad is up there smiling down on you and he couldn't be more proud of you. Sending lots of soft hugs and will be enjoying a poptart in his honor.

Hey guys-
I'm thinking that I didn't communicate this post clearly
His birthday is coming up on the 6th and he left this earth on Feb 28th.
Jfkoc sent me a message and then I read your wonderful posts.
I'm sorry! I meant it's coming up soon, and I'm wrestling with it.
You guys ( and gals ) are so thoughtful!
Have a poptarts or Twinkie anyway tomorrow!
Ghostdog- you may be into something! We could figure out the prefect delectable treat, pay off all of our bills, and finance the cure for ALZ!

You said birthday in your post! It's all those milestone days that can be a little rough. Best wishes. My dad's version of the answer to the pain question was that when the nurse would ask him if he had any pain, he would point to the nurse. It was their running joke. Your dad sounds like he was a fun guy and I truly wish you well.

Your dad's sense of humor was like my mother's. Long live the jokesters!!! {{{Hugs}}}
