Hello, My mother was recently diagnosed with Alzherimer's at the age of 82. I'm really not pleased with the potential side effects of the medication that has been recommended - Aricept.
Has anyone had success (if that is even that right term) with this medication? Thank you for reading this and any comments you may have.

My husband seems to have had all the side effects, although the doctor doesn't think it is due to the Aricept. We are off it for right now to see if the side effects go away and then come back when we try it again.

I have been taking (generic aricept) donepezil 10 mg - since an auto accident with loss of consciousness in December 2012.
Other than random muscle minor cramps, I did not have side effects until recently.
In November 2020, I began having difficulty sleeping. After checking with my sleep MD it was recommended that the donepezil be changed to a morning dose, instead of before bed. Since making this change I have not had trouble sleeping.
The diagnosis of early Alzheimer’s was official via lumbar puncture/spinal tap in August 2020.

My mother was diagnosed in 2016. She was packing everything up out of her apartment and putting it out on the side walk every single day. She would not know what day it was, she could not remember if she had eaten, she gave up driving, she saw people ( not real ) in her apartment and many many other strange and severe behaviors. After they tried her on 5 mg of the drug per day for 7 days. If she could tolerate it without or with minor side effects they would increase it to 10 mg perday. 5 in the morning 5 in the afternoon. After two weeks the behaviors subsided. No more packing up the house, seeing people and most of the other behaviors cleared up. Minimal side effects. We were so grateful. HOWEVER when it came time for the insurance to refill the scrip they gave her a 10mg pill. We gave it in the morning after day 2 she was like a caged animal. Her mind was in hyper drive, she was shaking, crying, would not sleep paranoid and massive headaches, loose bowel. It was terrible and I mean terrible. I said the only difference it he 10 mg of aricept given at one time. Her body and mind could not handle the 10 a once, I went back to splitting the pill in half and after two days, back to our new normal. It has been a game changer for us, even though she has progressed it still better than it was.
