(Source: Medscape) - New research suggests that cognitively intact elderly patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) may have low levels of amyloid beta 42 (Aß-42), a biomarker that has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease.

Unfortunately, the link goes to a sign in page, but the whole article can be found through an internet search (I have had this problem before, too).  According to the researchers, the lower levels of amyloid beta in the cerebrospinal fluid may be the result of higher levels of amyloid plaques in the brain.  This study provides further evidence of a possible link between depression and Alzheimer's disease (or perhaps they have a common origin).
