Longvida optimized Curcumin

Has anyone used this product?  Or have more information ? It was developed by neuroscientists at UCLA and is supposed to be the highest grade of curcumin from turmeric to pass the blood brain barrier. Research has been done that it can help Alzheimers. The website is

I just happened to get an update from Consumer Lab on Curcumin. It reviewed the absorption data on the 3 main enhanced formulations other than Longvida.  

One question on Longvida - anyone know how was it actually determined that it crossed the blood brain barrier and how do we know that other forms of well absorbed curcumin do not?

Also I notice that with the exception of Thorne Research, the major pharmaceutical grade supplement manufacturers pretty much stick with the BioPerine formulation. Anyone know why? The CL data clearly suggests that the BCM-95 formulation and the Meriva formulation are much more highly absorbed.

Our nutritionist recommended the zymogen one and that one uses BioPerine.

According to CL, the Meriva is best absorbed along with something called CurcuWin, but I found some questions as the measurements in the blood being active versus inactive forms. 

Any pharmacists or biochemists out there that can decipher this? And what about resveratrol - looks like similar issues.

If we're going to the trouble of giving these to out LO's then we'd like to make sure that we're giving them the most potent ones and in the correct dosages!!!

Polyphenols are small molecules and most if not all of them cross the blood-brain barrier. The problem with resveratrol is that it appears to be quickly metabolized.

Extensive metabolism in the intestine and liver results in an oral bioavailability considerably less than 1%. Resveratrol analogs, such as methylated derivatives with improved bioavailability, may be important in future research.

The problem with curcumin is that it is not well absorbed into the bloodstream.  There are (or were) some people on this board familiar with the different formulations of curcumin and their potential effectiveness.  Maybe they can respond to the specific questions.

One additional possibility is an inhalable form of curcumin, but producing it may change the chemical composition and effectiveness of the curcumin.  In general, inhalation eliminates two problems: metabolism by the liver and blood absorption (there is relatively little blood to pass through in the nose).

The key to likely treating Alzheimer's disease is the following:

Moreover, the antioxidant activity of curcumin increases when the phenolic group with a methoxy group is at the ortho position [1617]. The orthomethoxy group can form an intramolecular hydrogen bond with the phenolic hydrogen, making the H-atom abstraction from the orthomethoxyphenols surprisingly easy [18]. The H abstraction from these groups is responsible for the remarkable antioxidant activity of curcumin.

Hydrogen donation reduces levels of the oxidant peroxynitrite, partially reverses the oxidation of receptors regulating short-term memory, sleep, mood, social recognition and alertness, and partially reverses the nitration of enzymes and receptors governing blood flow in the brain, glucose levels in the brain, and the regeneration of neurons.  

Other methoxyphenols that have succeeded in small scale trials for Alzheimer's disease are eugenol in rosemary essential oil and geraniol in lemon essential oil via aromatherapy and ferulic acid and syringic acid in panax ginseng.  Other methoxyphenols such as sinapic acid and vanillin have shown promise as well against Alzheimer's disease (albeit not yet in human beings).
