I have read alot on 5htp and how it helps for depression and sleep.   I  know you cannot be on this and other antidepressants as it can have severe side efffects and interactions . but as an alternative to  a prescription med,  has anyone heard  about this or have tried it?

As a stand alone treatment, 5htp should help alleviate depression and improve sleep as it is a precursor to melatonin (sleep) and serotonin (mood).  5htp is perhaps helpful in the overall treatment of Alzheimer's disease (and maybe other forms of dementia) because it is a peroxynitrite scavenger and peroxynitrites are the main cause of Alzheimer's disease.

And the potential side effects.
