The open-label study was a single center, single arm trial in eight patients 63 years of age and older with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease (AD) to evaluate the safety and initial efficacy of Transcranial Electromagnetic Treatment (TEMT). Patients were enrolled at the University of South Florida Health/Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute, which also conducted most clinical study assessments. Treatment was administered in the patient’s home by a caregiver (spouse, relative), using the MemorEM device.

Patients received TEMT for one-hour periods twice daily for two months. Although limitations of this study include the small number of subjects, not having a control group, and being of relatively short treatment duration, 120 treatments were administered in-home and the cognitive benefits observed were clinically important/meaningful at the highest levels. Providing additional credibility to the observed cognitive enhancements were the beneficial changes in AD markers in blood and CSF, as well as the enhancement in brain MRI imaging.

This one confounds me.  Some electromagnetic stimulation may be good for the brain, but too much is not (the authors' claim that what they are using is safe and effective).

I've seen studies on TCDS TransCranial direct stimulation. Its being tried for Parkinsons, Tinnitus, I haven't really looked into it, here's a link.

the tests also showed that their ADAS-cog score, which assesses their memory, thinking, judgment and other cognitive skills, was raised by 4 points or more in 7/8 patients.

 This score is used as the gold standard for judging the efficacy of all AD treatments, and the four-point increase shows a large increase in cognitive performance which translates into clinically important improvement in mental function.

This is all the more satisfying when it is contrasted with the typical 4+ decline in this score over one year in patients with AD. 

In other words, it could be interpreted as turning the clock back one whole year on the disease – a significant improvement in cognitive performance.

The Head of  R & D for Biogen left to join a company called Apple Tree Partners(?). Gala Therapeutics, which is using RheOx uses a minimally invasive procedure to deliver non-thermal energy to the airways to reduce mucus-producing cells in patients with Chronic Bronchitis - If I remember it correctly Gala Therapeutics was created by Apple Tree Partners.

 When will people realize that there is more to treatment than drugs, in fact, what if a cell could be influenced- the same way a drug would, but without the drug, with.... I don't know... some kind of .........magic energy that isn't light and isn't heat.

lets see ....if it can heal people by sending that energy into the cells, whether its intra-venously ( inside the vein), shining NIR light at the photoreceptors in the eyes, or into up the nasal passages. Perhaps a really far-reaching version of light could penetrate the skull itself.

Desperate people and research is starting to show that merely 'shining' light or energy at a cell can improve that cells functionality. (and this benefit travels throughout the body to wherever its needed.) Though it will probably still be faster to use light or red light or beyond red light - near the brain, rather than by aiming that energy up an AD sufferer's bottom, as someone once suggested.

I was reading a study on the effect of electromagnetic waves on the brain, researchers expected to see an increase in blood flow to specific areas of the brain. But the increase of blood flow itself was negligible, what they did see was that theta waves increased.

Much has been written about Gamma waves, this researcher suggested that Theta waves are the waves the brain uses to communicate within itself, these waves bring all the communication together in the way that creates meaning or understanding (awareness of the thought in a larger context.

I should probably break this down into a few topics, add and verify my research. For now, please take it with a large grain of salt.

 

Oh, and even though their R&D guy left for a partly bio-medical tech company, (people do like to move up in their careers, get more responsibility and better titles)

 - I still have a strong suspicion that Biogen is onto something. With past critics saying they spend too much time trying to narrow a trial down to only the sub-group of people it can help - I wouldn't be surprised if they have found something that only works for people with a particular gene.  Once they can identify who it would help, ta-daaa, you have genetically customized medicine. But this is purely my speculation.

 

And I will say it again, It should only be a matter or time; until scientist can separate the useful parts of the drug from the harmful parts, or modify the delivery to penetrate the BBB, while sparing the other organs.

It always amazes me how much information regarding potentially effective treatments for  Alzheimer's disease either get ignored or are summarily dismissed.    I blame this in part on how various pharmaceutical companies, research scientists, funding organizations, etc. want so desparately to treat this disease with a drug.
