Here is a place to start when beginining to file for SSDI. It was a Godsend to me after I was told that I couldn't work as an Engineer anylonger at age 55.

My disclaimer: I'm not a professional in this area, only a person with AD that cares about others and can express myself yet. Diagnosed at age 58 in Stage 5, now appear firmly in Stage 4 for now- wonderful meds! I 'm 62 now.. Please read my bio that can be found by going to the "Volunteers" block in the blue letter section at the top of the page.
We encourage you to call the Alzheimer's Association's 24/7 Helpline1-800-272-3900 .
Ask for a Care Consultant who will be available
LATER...

If you have had the diagnosis and all medical records are available the process is quite simple, or at least it was for us. That's because of the special dispensation given for EOAD.
From date of application for my wife (on line) to receipt of SSDI confirmation was 26 days. Wow, I never believed anything in government moved that quickly.
Don't delay because they can only pay retroactive for 12 months from date of application, no matter what date they compute for disability.

Now that the special dispensation for EOAD has been fast tracked it has made a big difference in processing. Snowy I'm sorry you experience the delays at that time.

There's a difference between getting approval for SSDI and being put on Medicare.
Approval for SSDI is what has been fast-tracked. You are not eligible for Medicare for two years after being approved for SSDI.

Actually, since my DW was approved for SSDI retroactive one year from application date, she went on Medicare this month, two years from retroactive date but only one year after SSDI approval notification. It could all have been 4 months sooner if I hadn't procrastinated on applying after finding about the EOAD compassionate fast-tracking.

My story,
Application for SSDI was made when my wife was let go from her job last May. The employer was of aware of her EOAD for about two years previous to her termination. SSDI was very simple and would start payments within 6 months. The company that she worked for has a short and long term disability insurance policy for all employees. This covers her for one year. SSDI started to pay 6 months after application. So she is covered by the companies health insurance for 12 months. When that expires we had to wait one year for medicare . Hence the 2 year wait for coverage We will have to purchase insurance for 1 year. Hope this helps answer the medicare 2 year deal.
