Let me just pretend for a while

that the person sleeping next to me

is the wonderful person with whom I've shared my life.

Their quiet slumber a sign of peace

and contentment in our union.

Dreaming dreams of past joys

and future hopes.

Let me just pretend for a while

that my spouse on the couch beside me

in rapt attention to the television

is waiting on pins and needles

to cheer on our local sports hero.

Not speaking because they do not want

to miss a moment of the action.

Let me just pretend for a while

that the strange statement from my spouse,

seemingly a bunch of random nonsense

was just something I misheard.

Or a perhaps deep thought only partially

expressed in voice, something

we can discuss together later on.

Let me just pretend for a while

that the senior moment, a little

gaffe about a name, a place,  a time

was just a momentary glitch.

Something to be laughed about over lunch

or perhaps the genesis of some

good natured teasing, secure in our love.

Let me just pretend for a while

that when the love of my life

says “who are you and

what are you doing in my house.”

it is just a little joke; a game we play

when we are hoping for a pause

to share a warming moment of affection.

Let me just pretend for a while

that everything is going to be alright.

Only by pretending can I give my heart

a few untroubled beats,

my mind a brief parole from worry,

my soul a sabbatical from pain.

Pretending is all I have.

Very nice, and very sad at the same time.

You have an imagination, Markus. That can be steered in many directions. Keep using it. In boundless ways. Know. That anything is possible. --Jim

I think I' going into my second childhood/adolescence. I find myself contemplating poetry and emotionally all over the place. I hope this adolescence turns out to be more fun than my first one. I'll let you know if I  develop acne and my voice starts changing!

Excellent! Made me smile because I can relate to it, and made me cry for the same reason. Thank you for posting it.

Markus---Thank you for posting this.  Please keep a copy of it to refer to when your caregiving days are over.  It will serve as a reminder of the love you felt during your times of sadness.

This doesn't have to be a time of sadness, Markus. Seems to me that you've been perking up lately. Keep counting your multiple blessings. They outnumber the disappointments. You are learning to focus on the upbeat stuff of life,  All is not lost. Be the optimist. You know how to write. Write what pleases you. What buoys your spirit. Write love letters. Start acting like a natural born lover, There's so very much to love.  Love of life will pull you through. Give us some prose or poetry that expresses your buoyant love. The kind of love that overcomes sadness and sorrow. --Jim

I am finding my creative side is trying to come out more as I age. I have recently started painting. Always wanted to the play the piano.  Can an old dog learn new tricks?  Keep writing.
