Resources for Lesbian and Gay Elders and/or Caretakers of Same-Sex Partners/Spouses

There have been a few mentions of people who are facing the possibility of losing the homes that they've shared with their loved ones because of Medicaid not recognizing same-sex partners and spouses as legal relationships.

I want to provide a few resources just to get people started in figuring out where and how to reach out for help about these issues.

1. Lambda Legal > this organization has a help-line and deals with all types of legal matters related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people: http://www.lambdalegal.org/

2. SAGE > this organization is specifically devoted to issues faced by LGBT elders. It is based in New York but has extended its policy and service reach nationwide recently: http://sageusa.org/index.cfm

3. AARP > the AARP, with the help of SAGE, has begun to become much more active in addressing the issues unique to LGBT seniors: http://www.aarp.org/relationships/friends-family/aarp-pride/

4. Finally, I'd encourage you to get in contact with your Congressional representatives and Senators about this issue. Even if they are unable to help, it's vital that we raise the visibility of the unfairness of a system that penalizes same-sex couples by not legally recognizing our relationships.

I hope these resources are helpful, and I'll check back on this thread to see if any additional questions are raised with which I might be able to assist.

My love and admiration is immense for lesbian and gay elders and caregivers - you are my role models for how my relationship with my wife will be able to persevere through the challenges of the latter part of life. Thank you for that.

Leah

You might also find help from the ACLU through their support of LGBT issues:
