Tonight is the 13th anniversary of a car accident that changed my family's world.  A falling tree crushed the roof of the jeep my husband and then 10 year old daughter were driving.  She came away with some minor bruising.  He was in a coma for a week.  Our journey began that night. No one told us it would happen.  No one could tell us what would happen over time.  No one can to this day.  I remember every detail of that night, after that things are a blur for a long time.  I am here alone tonight, reliving so many emotions, so many details.  One windy night is all it took to change the world forever.

Northwoods,  I am so sorry for the accident and the injuries to your DH.  I have heard of dementia problems after a head injury.  I am worried about my brother. He took a nasty fall off of a ladder onto the concrete on his head.  He was in a coma too and now a year later showing signs of dementia.

Please come back here to learn and vent and share.  We are all on the journey together

Annie

Thanks Annie,   There is a strong correlation between traumatic brain injury (tbi) and demtias.  Unfortunately diagnosis is complex, if not impossible as multiple factors are in play.  In my husband's case, he has many symptoms of classic alz but has other characteristics that do not map well.  I encourage your brother to stay on top of treatments and therapies.  If only a portion of the brain was affected there is often things that a good rehab program can help "rewire".  As a neurologist told me, you could have 100 identical injuries and 100 different outcomes.  But wouldn't it be nice if they could tell you yours....
