I took my 89 yr old husband to the neurologist for his 6 mo appt.  DH sleeps a lot off and on all day and then sleeps 10 hrs. at night. I mentioned this to the Dr and he suggested a stimulant RX. I said no as DH is already taking BP med, pills for crohn's disease which he has had for over 40 yrs, Namenda, vitamins. The Dr. didn't push it.

Anyone have a DH or DW who sleeps a lot and was improved with taking a stimulant? I didn't get the name of it. Dr said it would be like drinking coffee. I still nixed the idea since I know every med has side effects. DH has moderate dementia and still goes grocery shopping with me, works crossword puzzles and does ADL.

I checked online and I did read Alzheimer's patients should never be given stimulants.

Why not just give him some coffee, or a soda with caffeine instead of stimulant drugs?  But... I think they sleep because they NEED to sleep. I let my DH sleep- even if we have company, or if we miss an activity because of it. I agree with your instincts on this one.

One of the coolest things I've read about in last few years is about brain cleansing.

So I figure sleep is a really good thing for PWD.
