Among more than 1000 existing drugs, scientists found two repurposed drugs that arrest neurodegeneration in mice. One of the drug trazodone, used for depression, is interesting.
Clinical trials using these two drugs are planned. The drug trazodone has been in use for some time now and is generally safe.

The article suggests that Trazodone and another experimental drug could possibly prevent protein misfolding in Alzheimer's. The article did not say it, but when they are talking about misfolded proteins in Alzheimer's, they are talking about beta amyloid. Haven't we heard this before? Drug companies have been working on the beta amyloid hypothesis for many years with no success. Perhaps many more years from now, they will succeed. I myself believe that decreasing neuroinflammation is the best course to pursue. There are a number of very safe leukotriene blocking drugs such as montelukast, zafirlukast, and others that show much promise in treating dementia, but no one is putting up the money for clinical trials on these drugs whose patents have expired.
