Also check with your state Department of Human Services, Department of Social Services, or whatever it's called in your state. Also, call the Commission/Agency on Aging in your area; they may be able to tell you what agency licenses ALFs and give you contact information for that state agency.

Or you can just ask one of the ALFs for the information - that's where I got it.

Dear Daughter of Diagnosed,

It's good to hear from you again. Unfortunately, assisted living facilities are not regulated by the federal government, which is why it is difficult to find information about inspections and complaints pertaining to this kind of care setting. However, assisted living facilities are held to state regulations that often involve licensing.

You might want to try a tool called Senior Housing Finder, a dementia-specific senior housing database that provides detailed listings of licensed residences throughout the United States that offer services especially for residents with dementia. It's free and easy to use, and can be found here:

http://www.seniorhousingfinder.org/

Additionally, the Assisted Living Federation of America offers tips regarding questions to ask when evaluating assisted living choices:

I hope this is helpful. Please keep us posted, and best of luck as you find the best option for your mother.

Sincerely,
Carrie H

Hi,
I received the good advice here regarding potential facilities to "check for complaints and check with state for any issues outstanding" and am wondering how to do that???

I am in California and have found two websites for this
http://www.canhr.org/NH_Data/CountyMenuHTML.html
http://memberofthefamily.net/registry/ca.htm
but they contain complaints for skilled nursing facilities only and we are looking for assisted living currently so the places we have visited are not on these lists.

Many thanks.
