My 80 year mother in law stays with us a few weeks at a time to visit and I notice that after she takes a bath sometimes we find these little brown splatters in the tub. Sometimes they are higher on the tub also. I don't know what's going on. Is she using the bathroom in our tub or not wiping and just using the shower to clean up. I don't know if she's getting dementia or something. She never used to do this before. I also don't want to offend her about it. Please help, I'm clueless on what to do.

Look for other symptoms...it could be serious or it could be lack of control of her coordination and reach "back there"...also, if she has bowel issues, it could be diet..my suggestion is a physical with some cogenative questions (and don't go for the classics, in my experience people "know" the answers)...don't assume the "worst" but look for all possible answers

gubblebumm's advice is good.  You might also try to get the physical done by a geriatric specialist - medicine is decidedly different for the elderly.

BTW, I believe she meant "cognitive" instead of "cogenative" questions.  If you're really concerned as regards her mental state, you could have her examined by a neurologist or sociologist specializing in this area.  That may be the best way to settle your mind - and your mother-in-law's.
