This is actually a piece I wrote here about a year ago, but as I was unable to get something written this week,  and as it seemed appropriate, I present it to you again.

Luke 1 : 13 , 17 ( NAS )

But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John...It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

At this time of year, if we can throw off the stigma of commercialism that tends to cover us all like dark clouds, we will remember that for Christians, this time is when we can give special remembrance to the birth of Jesus , who is The Christ. But about 6 months before Jesus was born, John, the one who would be known as " the baptist , " was born. John's job was to prepare the way for Jesus ; to get the people ready for the coming Messiah. It's kind of fascinating when you realize how many different events had to happen so that Jesus could be all that the prophets said He would be. And the whole time, God was orchestrating the times and circumstances . One of those was the birth of John. So, as you remember the birth of Jesus, take a moment and thank God for John too .

After all, John gave his life for Jesus, and then Jesus gave His life for the world. Have a merry Christmas season. If you like, you can think of it as Thanksgiving Day # 2.

Blessings,

Chris

Thank you. Clearly I need to learn more about John.

When looking at December 25 historically it becomes evident that the day will likely be one of merriment since a celebration has always existed around that time. The commercialism? We do not need to buy into it. We do not need to have parties or gifts. We could simply go to church.

This could be resolved by bringing Saturnalia back.

the ancient Roman festival of Saturn in December, which was a period of general merrymaking and was the predecessor of Christmas.

Elizabeth was a cousin of the Virgin Mary. Mary found herself to be with child (through Immaculate Conception) 6 months after Elizabeth conceived (which was miraculous because Elizabeth was barren, but also well past childbearing age at 88). Mary, knowing of Elizabeth's condition through the angel Gabriel, went to visit Elizabeth, and upon hearing Mary's voice, her unborn child lept for joy in her womb. She loudly said to Mary: "Blessed art thou among women, and blessed will be the child you shall bear."
