My mom says she is stopping her Memantine, taken once in the morning and once at night, because she feels it is keeping her awake.  I can't find any info to support this as a side effect.  Anyone else had their LO say this?  Thanks.

My LO had the opposite effect. It made her very sleepy and hard to rouse so we discontinued it and stuck with just Aricept. Everyone reacts to meds differently though. I would consult her doctor and/or pharmacist.

When I began taking Namenda, I had insomnia.  My neurologist told me I could take both doses together in the morning.  That worked.  Ask your neurologist.

My mom slept ok with Memantine. It did help her to understand directions better as she declined, until it didn’t. We used 1 mg of melatonin in the evenings which helped with her sleep too, it seemed.

As far as I know, Mamentine has many side effects and they can range from mild to severe, temporary or permanent. Many of them can be managed, and others can go away over time. Anyway, even the description I found here https://www.canadapharmacy.com/ doesn't include all of them and it is noted that you need to consult a doctor.

My mother (Dementia patient) has been on memantine for 4 years now.  Be sure to check the amount or dosages of this medication for your relative.  She was originally prescribed a 5mg dose of this medication but the doctor must increase the dosage within a couple of months to 10mg twice daily.  Check with your doctor if there seems to be more memory loss, etc.  Memantine has been effective for my mother but a dose of the melatonin at night seems to help her now with the insomnia.  I think the insomnia is a progression of the disease.  I found that exercise helps her to sleep better as well.  I walk with her when I can with her walker for an hour or so twice a week.

My husband  is on Memantine and I see no difference in his sleeping habits. He started with 5mg and is now on 10mg.  He takes it right before getting into bed as the doctor recommended. With his doctor's approval, I'm giving him one CBD gummy before bed 25mg. and one in the morning.  The one a night helps him sleep and reduces pain and the one in the AM seems to calm him.  The brand I use is called FAB CBD.  I have no financial interest in that company. They have a sleep gummy that I take that has other ingredients but check with your doctor about that.  If he sleeps too late in the morning or takes too many naps during the day, he has more trouble sleeping at night.  He goes to bed at 11:30pm and gets up about 9:30am.
