UTI - paranoia
mom went to ER Monday night. She had a raging UTI. She was released from hospital just today to a nursing facility. She has been experiencing paranoia ever since she regained enough strength to speak. This wasn’t part of her baseline behaviors prior to the UTI.
I really thought she would be able to return to her old self once the infection was resolved but we haven’t. The delusions are so sad and she is so Earnest in her beliefs. She thinks the nurses, doctors, aides (and me in my scheme to “get rid of her”) are all out to do her harm.
Anyone had this experience?
Maybe try giving her some pomegranate juice along with other drinks, this may help her - I did this with my dad when he had post anesthesia delirium and it seemed to help a lot. We gave him 16 oz pomegranate juice twice a day for 2 weeks. This is the product I used, but there are others and even sugar free versions if you need that:
This juice is also good for clearing UTI's.
Hi Leahm, sorry to hear about your Mom and what's going on now.
My mom had horrid UTI symptoms but it turned out to be low sodium but .. we were in the Urgent care, ER and hospital for about 10 days in and out because of it : ( and then they discharged to a Skilled Nursing Facility. Mom was completely incoherent and I think almost every nurse, MA, almost all medical professionals including the two doctors I dealt with at Hospital and the SNF said very matter of factly "this may just be her new baseline. You need to adapt to it."
Since there was no UTI and only delusion of it, they discharged her and sent her home. IT was very hard but I didn't give up. I tried to keep our routine as much as possible even though she was out of it. Moving her around like a doll and dressing and spoon feeding. Turns out mom has come back to some of her self, not as she was in Mid January just before the events but she is 80% back.
I had no clue on the hospital delirium dx. Great info to learn and read up on.
Hope things go better for your mom and you. I'll keep you in prayer.
