Prof. Peter Mittler At Global Online Meeting

Today Prof. Peter Mittler gave the discussion at the global Dementia Alliance online meeting. In attendance were people from the UK, Scotland, USA, and Australia (not exactly sure about exact locations). It was a very exciting presentation and conversation.

He had been a psychologist, and also worked in an organization raising awareness for disabled persons, he now works to raise awareness about dementia.

He gave a very interesting presentation.

The current issue is trying to get PWD a place at the UN conference on disability and dementia.

So far, regarding the WHO Conference on Dementia, President Obama signed it, but we still need it to go through the senate. It has come up twice, and is needing only 6 more signatures. I, personally, am not exactly sure at the moment how we might go about doing anything about that, but will hopefully find out.

He stated that never has the US Alz Societies (or orgs) submitted anything to the UN. He suggested that we raise the issue to our associations and societies.

The worldwide accepted term for people with down syndrome and the like is "intellectual disabilities."

Again Alzheimer's Scotland was brought up and is considered the leader in care for people with Alz and dementia.

The gist of the March 2015 WHO conference was to never underestimate a person with intellectual disabilities. That they are demanding their rights as people...and the right to be consulted about their care.

He shared that Disabled People International is a very strong organization.

DAI - Dementia Alliance International is trying to run daily blog posts for Alzheimer's month, and they would like any contributions you care to send (by PWD).

They also just came out with a book of edited stories from PWD...yea!

The meeting was recorded, and I will post later when it comes out.

The usual method is to write your three members of Congress asking for their support for the proposal.

You are a good writer. Put your reasons in your own words.

E-mail works best since all ground mail gets screened and may take weeks to reach its destination.

Don't be insulted if you get a letter from an aide. It would be impossible to personally read all correspondence . However, the gist of all is given to the head honcho.
