Researchers of Boston University has finally found out how toxins are eliminated from the brain while you are asleep, which could further help prevent one of the common neurodegenerative disorders called Alzheimer’s.

The researchers explained that when you are in non-REM sleep, the waves of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) wash the brain and eliminate toxins, which helps in synchronizing the nerve cells or neurons.

My DW of 51 years has always had good sleep of 8-9 hours a night for the past 51 years. She is now in stage 7d at 71 years old. Now the more she sleeps the less she becomes. Just my two cents.

If this were true, my Mom would not have Alzheimer’s.

I think it's going to end up being another factor to be considered just like all of the other factors - diet, exercise, various chemical toxins, etc.. And yeah, if sleep were the only thing, my sister wouldn't have Alzheimer's either. She's always been a good sleeper, although not so much now.

That NPR segment that RIM posted had an interesting note:

"It's a vicious cycle where amyloid decreases sleep, and decreased sleep results in more amyloid," Jagust says.

Ugh.

If sleep prevented Alzheimer’s, the number of people with Alzheimer’s would be far less, and I think much more publicity and news would involve that measure.

I can think of several people I know personally, who got plenty of sleep and still got Alzheimer’s, and that’s just me. I know personal anecdotes don’t really matter, but this as an answer defies logic. Would that it was true....
