My 3 secrets for living independently with dementia
I wish these were not secrets, but were more common knowledge. I learned about these secrets right here, from the members. I did not know these strategies before I joined.
1. I used Best Practices to improve my functioning and to prolong the early stages. Time in the early stages is to be used to make decisions and preparations for later stages.
2. I avoid stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety reduce my cognition by half! I use a stress reduction tactic. I prioritize rest and restful sleep.
3. I manage my environment. This is still a work in progress, but thanks to the members, I have learned what I have to do. I am developing daily, weekly and monthly routines. I want to live in a simplified, downsized home. I am making things easy on myself.
A strategy that I knew from before is to keep a positive attitude. This is not one of the secrets, this is my personality. I'm not going to hide from life. I choose to LIVE my life, even with cognitive impairment or dementia! It is very difficult, but I will be methodical and keep going.

--take medications as prescribed. The memory medications may help some PWDs.
---eat a brain healthy diet. The Mediterranean diet or the MIND diet are suggested. Eat fruits and vegetables for antioxidants, and fish and nuts for omega-3 fats. Occasional red wine may be allowed if desired.
---exercise vigorously to tolerance
--continue to stimulate your brain
--continue to socialize; small groups are better.
